Can Wrong CIJ Inkjet Solvent Damage Your Printer System?
Using the wrong CIJ (Continuous Inkjet) solvent can cause serious, sometimes irreversible damage to your printer system. Here is a breakdown of the risks and mechanisms involved.
What Can Go Wrong
1. Printhead & Nozzle Clogging or Corrosion
CIJ inks and solvents are chemically engineered to work together as a matched system. The solvent's role is to maintain proper viscosity, evaporation rate, and conductivity. If the wrong solvent is used:
- Ink precipitation / solidification — incompatible solvents can cause ink solids to drop out of suspension, forming sludge that blocks the microscopic nozzles.
- Chemical attack — some solvents may swell, soften, or corrode the printhead's internal seals, gaskets, and nozzle plate materials.
- Conductivity mismatch — CIJ systems rely on precise ink conductivity for droplet charging and deflection. Wrong solvent alters conductivity, causing misdirected drops, poor print quality, or total print failure.
2. Ink Circulation System Damage
CIJ printers recirculate ink through a closed-loop system. An incompatible solvent can:
- Degrade pump seals, tubing, and filters
- Cause ink to gel or separate in the recirculation line
- Lead to blockages in the make-up valve, filter, or nozzle return line
3. Component-Level Failures
- Pump failure — increased viscosity or chemical incompatibility can overload the gear pump or diaphragm pump
- Solvent valve malfunction — the wrong solvent may have different evaporation rates, confusing the automatic viscosity control system (which keeps ink at the correct thickness)
- Sensor contamination — conductivity sensors, temperature probes, and level sensors can be fouled by chemically incompatible mixtures
4. Print Quality Degradation
Even if the system doesn't immediately fail, the wrong solvent typically produces:
- Inconsistent drop formation
- Satellite drops (tiny ink splashes around the intended dot)
- Poor adhesion or smearing on the substrate
- Slow or uneven drying
Why It Happens
What to Do If the Wrong Solvent Was Used
- Stop printing immediately — do not attempt to "run it through"
- Drain the entire ink system — including ink tank, make-up tank, and all lines
- Flush the system — use the correct, manufacturer-recommended flush solvent (never use water or generic thinners unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer)
- Replace filters — the filters are almost certainly contaminated
- Inspect and possibly replace — seals, tubing, and the printhead if heavy corrosion or clogging is found
- Refill with genuine ink-solvent pair and run a full calibration
Prevention
- Always use manufacturer-approved ink and solvent for your specific CIJ model (e.g., Domino, Videojet, Markem-Imaje, Hitachi, etc.)
- Label all containers clearly and train operators on proper refill procedures
- Never mix solvents from different suppliers or different product lines
- Keep MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) on hand for both ink and solvent
